There is some debate that the use of sippy cups, like the prolonged use of bottles and pacifiers, may facilitate the retention of infantile suckling patterns and interfere with the development of speech and swallowing. As a result, many occupational therapists and speech language pathologists recommend the use of alternative options such as a cup with a straw, a standard cup, or a 360 style cup with a seal. This review is of the NUK Evolution 360 cup.
Description of cup:
The NUK Evolution 360 cup is made of transparent plastic and measures just over 3 inches in diameter and 4.5 inches tall. It tapers in the middle for a smaller hand grip and then gets slightly wider at the base for increased stability. The lid screws onto the cup and the cup itself is threaded at the neck. The lid itself is made of hard, solid colored plastic and has a rubbery center insert that pops in and out for cleaning. The entire cup weighs about 2 ounces when empty and approximately 11 ounces when completely filled. It has an 8 liquid ounce capacity.
Pros:
The cup has a high volume capacity without being overly heavy or bulky for toddler use. The transparent sides makes it easy to see how much liquid is left in the cup, and the relatively equal taper for the hand grip makes it easier to judge the percentage of the liquid volume that remains in the cup. The rubber center insert on the lid removes easily for cleaning and snaps back into place without stretching or straining the rubbery material. The seal is fairly strong and allows for only a slow leakage of liquid when the cup is turned on its side.
Cons:
The threading at the neck of the cup prevents this cup from being used without the lid. Although the liquid leakage is minimal, this cup does still leak slowly and can leave a small puddle if left on its side for an extended period of time.
Therapeutic implications:
As a 360 cup, the NUK Evolution 360 cup is a good option for a toddler as it allows for a high volume capacity in an easy to manage size and with a fairly good anti-spill feature for parental convenience. However, because of the threading on the neck, the cup cannot easily transition to use as a standard cup, causing issue for some children who may become attached to their cup and unwilling to part with it in order to advance to a more mature cup option without the spill proof lid. You should consider the specific child and their individual personalities and tendencies to determine if this cup would be an appropriate option for them.
